I was the founder and organizer of TonkaHacks. I worked with my Principal and led 10 peers to organize the first ever high school hackathon in my community. We promoted the use of technology to solve problems we face in society. TonkaHacks 1.0 was held in October 2019. We had a fantastic turnout with students from numerous high schools across the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area.
xIn my 1st year in DECA, I competed in the Financial Consulting event. I created a presentation to advise my client on their budget. After receiving 2nd of 15 at the District level, I qualified for and competed at State. Here, I received a top test score for the finance exam, and I delivered my enhanced presentation. I received 4th of 80 in my state for this event and went on to Internationals. After taking another exam and giving 2 presentations with the app I made, I got 6th at Internationals.
After achieving 6th at Internationals, I was voted to be an officer of our club by my advisors and peers. Through this club, I learned about business and finance concepts. While competing in Financial Consulting, I met with a professional consultant at Wells Fargo to learn about what the career is actually like. This year, I spearheaded our new mentorship program in which returning members mentor 2 new members, guiding them through DECA. Through the mentorship program, we saw a 100% increase in the number of first year members who qualified for Internationals.
xLaunchX is a business program founded at MIT to teach students how to launch a start-up. I spent a month at the University of Michigan in June 2019 where I learned about the basics of business. My team and I conducted market research, progressed through the stages of product development and marketing. With my team, I co-founded a healthcare company, Capsa, to address the problem of prescription opioid abuse in teens. We have also filed our LLC.
xI am the founder and organizer of TEDxYouth@MinnetonkaHS. I worked with TED and my Principal, leading five peers to organize the first TEDx event in my community to promote open conversation about adversity and how we can overcome it. I raised $3,000 to put on the event. After having great success with the first event in November 2019, I organized a second event in September 2019 on the topic of "Towards a Technological World."
xIn 12th grade, I co-founded Jumpstart, an online startup competition. We wanted to provide students the opportunity to explore their interests in a safe manner during the COVID-19 global pandemic. Combining the best aspects of a hackathon and a business competition, we hosted over 600 students from around the world to create a solution to an identified problem using technology and present the business implication of their startup. After having great success with Jumpstart 1.0 in May 2020, Jumpstart 2.0 EdTech will take place in August 2020, focusing on the gaps with online education.
xIn 11th grade, I utilized acoustic signals to help solve the problem of school shootings. I spent the year gathering and analyzing data to detect concealed weapons using high frequency sound. I was fortunate to be published with this work and attend Intel ISEF 2019.
xIn 10th grade, I constructed a subaqueous robot to assist divers underwater.
xIn 12th grade, I developed a 3D printed prosthetic hand to partially restore writing ability in amputees.
xIn Backpack Tutoring, we tutored struggling elementary students in the Minneapolis school district in Math and English. The students that we tutored are often 1-2 grade levels behind, leading to potential future failure. To combat this, we took a group of high school students to tutor these kids for 2 hours every week.
I was selected as captain of our organization for 11th and 12th grade. My proudest moment in this organization was when I inspired in my mentee a love for math. I always enjoyed math, so it was heartbreaking when Layla, a 3rd grader, hid behind curtains to avoid her homework. One day, I improvised to explain how an integration problem builds upon simpler concepts, and she was hooked. Now, instead of hiding from her homework, she brings out math flashcards for me to quiz her.
xI acted as a peer adviser through the First Mates program at my high school. I led several high school orientation activities for my group of about fifteen freshmen, showing them the ropes and giving them advice for the next four years. I was also selected to be part of the First Mates Board, making critical decisions for the future of the program.
xI was selected as captain by advisor/vote at the end of my junior year. I directed 4 peers to teach middle schoolers debate in a week-long summer camp (August 2019). I competed in the Classic debate format throughout my high school career. I greatly enjoyed not only improving my communication and logical reasoning skills, but also becoming well-versed in international topics. I learned about the US military presence in the South China Sea and how Amazon is approaching a monopoly.
National Honor Society (NHS) is a volunteer-based organization that also promotes high academic standing. I applied for NHS in October 2018, and am completed my 2nd year with the organization during the 2019-2020 school year. We organized service projects in our community to give back to the less fortunate. For example, we made blankets for the local shelter, wrote thank you notes for active military personnel, and packed food for individuals affected by disaster through our local nonprofit Feed My Starving Children.
I am humbled to have been voted as President of our NHS organization for the 2019-2020 school year. As such, I led our meetings with the 100+ members and was in charge or organizing the aforementioned service opportunities. From NHS, I feel I have learned the importance of and how to exemplify our 4 pillars: service, leadership, scholarship, and character.
xI firmly believe in Leslie Knope's saying from Parks and Rec: "No one achieves anything alone." I'm extremely fortunate to have incredible teams who helped me receive these honors. Thank you!
I love to learn, so I made it a point to take the most challenging coursework in high school. Check out my classes here!
Most of the learning I've done happened outside of the classroom. Through clubs and organizations, I learned how to be a leader and pursued my diverse interests.
Over the past few years, I've gotten the opportunity to take a deep dive into some of the questions I'm most interested in. Check out my research projects here!
As important as it is to take advantage of our opportunities, it's equally as important to give back. Here are some of the service experiences most meaningful to me.
